Help us improve cycle and bus journeys
Transport for Wales is exploring how to make travel using cycles and buses more convenient. We’re gathering feedback to better understand how people travel so that we can shape future improvements that work for everyone.
This is part of an exploratory study. Your feedback at this early stage will help guide our future plans.
We want to understand
- How people currently use cycles and buses together
- How they might want to use cycles and buses in the future
- How Transport for Wales could improve bus journeys and make them more accessible and convenient
- Whether better cycle-bus connections could encourage more people to cycle and travel by bus.
How to Have Your Say
You can share your views by:

Cut off
by ellieking, 7 months agoLiving in Aberystwyth and using my e-bike as my main form of transport, I feel like everything south of me is cut off. The coast road is too dangerous to cycle on and the distances are too far. The trains are excellent where they are and I can jump off with my bike for the last few miles, but there's nothing south of me, and no good connections to the north coast either. If I could take my bike on the bus, I could get to pretty much everywhere in Wales, my whole life would open up. At the moment... If I could take my bike on the bus, I could get to pretty much everywhere in Wales, my whole life would open up. At the moment I save up my shopping in big shops for when I go to visit family in England, which is money I'd rather spend in Wales and also not have to restrict to every few months. I would use the bus dramatically more if I could use them as a jumping off point with my bike. Even locally it would help me avoid the bottlenecks of dangerous roads leaving Aber, then I could cycle on the quieter roads beyond those. -

Decision time in Aberystwyth
by Jack7, 7 months agoI was cycle camping from Barmouth to Fishguard during the bad weather week in Sept. My start and end points were dictated by availability of train stations because I couldn't take my bike on a bus. The weather got so bad that I had to decide in Aberystwyth whether to continue or not, because that was the last place with a train station until Fishguard. I decided to visit a friend in Saundersfoot instead of continuing. Tfw app gave me one option to get there, about 3 hour trip for £10. Great, except that I knew this had to be... I called tfw and no I want allowed to take my bike on a traws cymru bus. So I had to pay around £50 and make a 6-7 hour journey via Shrewsbury to get there. -

The bus stops are too far away / routes are inadequate
by MC1, 7 months agoThe nearest bus stop to my house is one mile away, which means that if I was to make a journey by bus I would have at least a 2 miles to walk to/from the bus stop, plus the distance to walk at the destination. My health isn't perfect and this is too far for me to mange, therefore I can't use buses at all, unless the routes are improved. (The area is Nottage, Porthcawl)I have considered cycling to the bus stop, but I have been told that there is no guarantee that there will be space for my... Continue reading

Bus Service Information
by BusMan, 7 months agoIn bus stations and at bus stops in my area, there is no information about bus times or which stop bus services use. There is also no real time information about whether buses are running on time. Most service buses now should have audio/visual next stop announcements on the bus but I have not seen any buses with this working and the regulations do not appear to be enforcedBus times change but passengers are not told. In my local bus station, services are moved from one stop to another but passengers are not informed leading to confusion. Occasionally new... Continue reading

Occasionally new services are introduced but this is not promoted and there is no marketing.
Before doing anything else these basics need to be addressed to give existing and new users confidence in the bus network.

There are no busses at times when I need them
by Bikegirl, 7 months agoThe bus service into Cardiff is expensive. It would be cheaper for me to park in work than it would be to catch the bus (£60+ the last time I checked for a monthly pass). The busses do not stop near to my place of work and the bus route around Cardiff Centre does not go near the Cardiff Central station. The Llanedeyrn bus 57,58, does NOT go into the new bus station. This also erks my family members and neighbours.

The busses do not run early enough or late enough for me to catch them into work for all my work shifts - I work shift work, sometimes starting as early as 3.30am and sometimes finishing as late as 2am. It is not feasible for me to catch the bus as the busses do not run at these times. However I would take the bus if they were cheaper, more reliable, a more convenient route and ran earlier and later (24hr).

For 6 months of the year, I would wear waterproofs. Overheating is not the issue it is on a bicycle.
Even on a crowded train, there was always room for my scooter.

Even on a crowded train, there was always room for my scooter.
This also gave me the flexibility to grab a public transport trunk line anywhere in the city and make connections that were not possible by busses due to timetabling, as I was able to quicky travel a couple of miles. I could get anywhere in the city without having to wait.
Now we live in Wales, I work from home and we still have 3 cars and only one of us begrudgingly uses the bus, due to the inconvenient timetable requiring 90 minute waits between busses.
