Transport for Wales (TfW) are working alongside Wrexham County Borough Council, Welsh Government, Wrexham University, and wider partners, to bring forward a major regeneration scheme in the area surrounding Wrexham General railway station, referred to as ‘Wrexham Gateway’. The Wrexham Gateway project includes the redevelopment of the Kop stand at the STōK Racecourse, in addition to regeneration possibilities surrounding Wrexham General railway station.

As part of this project, TfW has identified an opportunity to develop a new transport hub to the front of the station. This will enable the area to be transformed with the aim of achieving the following:

  • Improved interchange facilities between modes (for example if interchanging between rail and onward bus).
  • Improved walking and cycling connectivity to/from the railway station and nearby destinations such as city centre, STōK Racecourse and Wrexham University.
  • Improved user experience at the railway station.
  • Enhanced setting of the station and welcome to the city of Wrexham.

TfW has commissioned WSP to develop a WelTAG stage two (outline business case) study to progress proposals for the Wrexham Gateway transport hub. The purpose of the study is to further develop potential options for the transport hub within the context of and to support wider regeneration ambitions of the Wrexham Gateway scheme.

Why are we engaging with the public?

The study aims to understand in more detail the problems and challenges that members of the public and businesses face when travelling to, from, and whilst using Wrexham General railway station. This is to ensure that we capture a wide range of issues and potential opportunities in the area, whilst also providing an update to the Wrexham Gateway transport hub proposals.

Contact the project team

If you have any questions related to the project, we have provided a list of frequently asked questions to the right. If you find your question has not been covered within these, please feel free to contact the project team by:

  • Email: PorthWrexhamGateway@wsp.com
  • Post (FAO: Wrexham Gateway transport hub): Transport for Wales, Ellice House (Unit H), Wrexham Business Village, Ellice Way, Wrexham, LL13 7YL.

What will happen after the engagement period closes?

All suggestions received will be considered in the development of design options for the transport hub. Short-listed options will be considered against their contribution towards the delivery of the project objectives as well as local, regional, and national policy ambitions. We will also consider their likely deliverability – as well as benefits and/or impacts upon social, economic, and environmental and cultural factors.

Should these shortlisted options be accepted for progression, we will then progress (subject to funding and agreement of partners upon the options) through to WelTAG stage 3, at which point we would seek specific feedback upon the more detailed designs.

  • Please share your views by taking part in this survey. It should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete.  If you would rather not complete our survey, please submit your response to us in writing by emailing PorthWrexhamGateway@wsp.com or alternatively, take part in one of our in-person events.
