What is a Transport Hub?

A transport hub is a facility or location where people can easily and conveniently change between different transport modes. They help people make end to end journeys using sustainable transport effectively and safely.

Transport hubs are crucial for facilitating a multi modal transport network.

In the case of Wrexham Gateway, it is intended that these proposals will make it easier for people to use the bus, walk, wheel, or cycle to access the station. It will also allow visitors to Wrexham who arrive by train to travel to their final destination.

What are the objectives for the Transport Hub at Wrexham Gateway?

The key objectives for the Transport Hub at Wrexham Gateway are:

    • Delivery of improved interchange facilities between rail, bus and other modes
    • Improved walking, wheeling and cycling connectivity to/from the station and nearby destinations such as the City Centre and other nearby destinations including   SToK Racecourse and Wrexham University and linking with the Mold Rd Active Travel Enhancement Scheme
    • Improved user experience at Wrexham General Station
    • Increased capacity to handle the  forecast increase in rail users
    • A high-quality and accessible facility suitable for a City Centre location, providing an attractive welcome to the City of Wrexham.

What has happened to date to inform the development of the Transport Hub?

To get funding for transport schemes we need to develop a business case.  In Wales, this is normally done through the WelTAG process.   The process identifies a shortlist of options for the scheme (in WelTAG 1) and then identifies a preferred option (in WelTAG 2).

We have previously done a WelTAG 1 and 2 business case for Wrexham Gateway Transport Hub.  These have informed the development of the Transport Hub proposals.

As part of the WelTAG 2 development, a public engagement was undertaken in winter 2023.  The views expressed by stakeholders and the public at this time were considered as part of the final WelTAG 2 and have informed the proposals that are being consulted on now.

Will Wrexham General Station Buildings be affected by the Proposals?

Wrexham General Station is the focal point of the  Transport Hub proposals .  The current plans focus on the area in front of Wrexham General Station which includes   the station access and car park.

There are no proposals   at present for changes within the station buildings.  Transport for Wales are however currently considering options for how passengers facilities within the station can be enhanced to complement the wider Transport Hub proposals and will be seeking your views on these options in due course.

Will there be service enhancements in rail or bus as a direct result of these development proposals?

There are no planned rail or bus frequency improvements as a direct result of these development proposals.

However, other work that is being progressed by Transport for Wales, Welsh Government and partners in the rail industry are seeking to improve service levels from Wrexham General.   This includes improving the frequency of services on the Borderlands Line and increasing frequency of services to Chester.  This is expected to increase the number of passengers using Wrexham General Station, so we are designing the Transport Hub to accommodate that increased demand.

Transport for Wales is working with Wrexham Council and bus operators to enhance bus services across Wales, including in Wrexham.  This Transport Hub is being designed to accommodate an increase in the number of buses that stop at the station.

How does the Wrexham Gateway – Eastern Development relate to the Mold Road Active Travel Enhancement Scheme?

The Mold Road Active Travel Enhancement is a scheme that Wrexham Council are developing to improve facilities for people who walk, wheel or cycle along the route to the city centre.

As this route passes the Wrexham Gateway Eastern Development, and it is the route that many people use to access the station, it is important that the two schemes complement each other. The Wrexham Gateway Eastern Development proposals have been designed with access from Mold Road as a key consideration.

How are Wrexham Lager involved in the Wrexham Gateway – Eastern Development Zone Proposals?

We are currently working with Wrexham Lager to explore the possibility of relocating their brewery into the former Jewsons building to give them the ability to expand their operation to meet rising market demands. You may have noted on the drawings and in the narrative that Wrexham Lager are also investigating the possibility of restoring the Cambrian Sheds by the side of the railway and converting them into a tap room, restaurant, shop and visitor centre.

Nothing is committed yet and the change in operation won’t be a part of the upcoming Planning Application that this consultation relates to but the land around them will be. We would, nevertheless, be interested in your views on the proposals.

What if I think of something after this consultation has closed?

If I am unable to attend any of the in-person events and do not wish to submit an online response, where can I collect paper copies of the survey?

Paper feedback forms in Welsh and English will be available at the drop-ins, or these can be picked up during the engagement period from deposit locations at Wrexham General Station ticket office and Wrexham Library (Rhosddu Road, Wrexham LL11 1AU) from 2 April 2025.
