FAQs
Where is the Western Gateway and why is this project being undertaken?
The Western Gateway site is the currently undeveloped plot of land located between Moneypenny’s offices and the A483, to the west of Wrexham city centre. The site is owned by Wrexham County Borough Council.
This project is being undertaken to identify transport improvements in the local area that can be implemented to enable development of the Western Gateway site as an exemplar employment development. The project is considering access by all transport modes, with a particular focus on identifying measures to improve access by sustainable transport modes (walking, cycling, wheeling, and public transport).
What is WelTAG?
The Western Gateway project is being progressed through WelTAG, which is Welsh Government’s Transport Appraisal Guidance. WelTAG is used to provide guidance in the development and appraisal of transport-related interventions and is required to secure funding from Welsh Government. The guidance enables transport planners to compare different proposals on a like-for-like basis, making it easier to identify the most beneficial scheme.
We are undertaking a WelTAG Lite, which incorporates Stages 1-3 into a single report and identifies a list of preferred schemes for further development/implementation. WelTAG comprises of 5 stages, which are intended to cover the lifecycle of a proposed transport intervention, from conception to monitoring and evaluation the success of the scheme.
What is the North Wales Growth Deal?
The North Wales Growth Deal is an agreement between the Welsh Government and the UK Government to provide more than £1billion investment in North Wales over 15 years (to 2036), generating over 4000 new jobs, and £2.4billion into the economy. Signed in December 2020, the agreement secures funding of £120 million from Welsh Government and £120 million from the UK Government to invest in the Growth Deal's project portfolio.
The Western Gateway, Wrexham site forms part of the Land and Property North Wales Growth Deal portfolio, which includes a £9million commitment for investment at the site. The purpose of this programme is to address land and property challenges within the region to unlock opportunities and provide residential and employment premises.
As a key local site, is the Wrexham Maelor Hospital involved with the project?
There has been engagement throughout the project with representatives from the Wrexham Maelor Hospital to ensure that access to this key site is not impacted negatively.
Why is my feedback required and what will it be used for?
Your feedback will be considered to inform the key priorities for improvements in and around the Western Gateway site. This will help us to ensure that the proposals being developed are in line with public expectations and focus on the highest priorities areas.
What if I think of something after this round of engagement has closed?
Provided the scheme is progressed, we would envisage further public consultation summarising the findings of the WelTAG Lite study and the proposed measures being progressed. The scheme would also be required to follow any statutory processes associated with, for example, planning requirements if relevant.
You are also welcome to send any further queries and comments through to the project team at PorthWesternGateway@wsp.com, until the end of April 2025.
