Consultation has concluded

Transport for Wales, the Welsh Government’s Strategic Road Network team, Torfaen County Borough Council and Monmouthshire County Council are working together to provide a new safe and accessible route that can be used by everyone in the community to walk, wheel or cycle to destinations between Pontypool in Torfaen through to Usk in Monmouthshire.

The proposed new route connects Pontymoel, Pontypool and New Inn Station, Mamhilad Park Estate, Little Mill, Monkswood, Rhadyr and Usk Island, offering more travel options between schools and colleges, local services, centres of employment, and the wider community.

Being able to easily and safely walk, wheel and cycle along the route will provide communities with a healthy, green and convenient travel alternative to using the car for some journeys, reducing traffic and improving local air quality.

Our plan is to design and build a high quality, dedicated active route that runs directly alongside the main roads that connect Pontypool and New Inn Station with Usk Island (the A4042 and A472). It will be free from all vehicular traffic giving both regular and new cyclists, walkers and wheelers the confidence to use the route.

We want to hear from residents and visitors to the area about their views of the proposed design and route so that it meets the needs of everybody wanting to use it, as far as possible.

Have Your Say by completing our short which will help us to feed your views back to the design and engineering teams taking forward this project. This will ensure your opinions will be considered in the final scheme design.

If you are unable to complete the survey, please contact: engagement@tfw.wales.

The survey will be open from 13 – 27 October 2025.

To find out more about the new proposed route, we are also running a series of drop-in information sessions across Torfaen and Monmouthshire where the plans and maps of the new route will be on show with staff on hand to answer any questions you have regarding the proposals.
